Coming Out Day, Diversity Center Coffee Hour, and more!

Everyone has been working so hard and things are really coming together! Thanks to Paul and Dondi for putting together the wonderful flyers (attached) and to Ben for chasing down the button maker (sorry about that Ben :) ), and to everyone else who as helped make this week happen. We had a great meeting on Friday to get everyone on the same page, and this week is looking very promising. Here are some things to look forward to in the coming days:

Coffee Hour FlyerOn Tuesday, October 10, the Diversity Center is holding this year’s first Coffee Hour. Heath will be talking about Coming Out Day, the history, the importance, what is happening at OIT for the event, and resources for people who are interested in learning more. The goal is to help start dialog with people and build momentum for the following day. Stop by the CU Union Peak Lounge (in front of the Diversity Center) at 2:00pm for FREE coffee and snacks!

Later that night, Azim Khamisa will speak in the CU at 7:00pm about the power of forgiveness in overcoming violence, hate and prejudice. A successful international investment banker turned social activist, after his 20-year old son Tariq was murdered by a 14-year-old gang member, Azim has helped teach more than 250,000 children how to find peaceful solutions to conflict. Give him a listen; it sounds like he has positive message tComing Out Day Flyerhat we could all learn from.

Wednesday, October 11 is National Coming Out Day, and we will have a table set up in front of the Diversity Center from about 9am to 4pm. This year’s theme is “Talk about it.” The goal is to open dialog with friends and family about LGBT issues, and to help build understanding and acceptance. There will be lots of books and other resources, and materials such as bracelets, pins, buttons, shirts, and stickers to help “come out” as a LGBT person or a supportive ally. Tell your friends, and stop by any time. There will be lots of people to chat with, and free cake!

Day of Silence - April 26, 2006

The Day of Silence®, a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN®) in collaboration with the United States Student Association (USSA), is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bullying and harassment unacceptable in schools take part in activities to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment - in effect, the silencing - experienced by LGBT students and their allies. Students can participate by choosing not to speak throughout the day of April 26.

Cards that explain the activity and your silence are available in the ASOIT office.  Day of Silence buttons are also available for those who wish to show their support.  A silent luncheon will be held in front of the Diversity Center 12:00-2:00pm, and there will be a “Breaking the Silence” get-together at 6:00pm in Mt. Scott.  Snacks will be provided.  For more information, please visit http://dayofsilence.org.
